SOUTHALL: A Brief History

Population figures

Since 1801 decennial censuses have been made, and below is a list of the numbers of people counted in Southall. Figures include patients at St Bernard’s Hospital since its building and also the children in the St Marylebone School when it was open. Between censuses the Registrar General issues annual estimates of population, and some of these figures are also included in the table. Owing to the war there was no census in 1941.

Before 1801 the number of inhabitants was probably fairly static and had amounted to about 500 ever since the Middle Ages except when wars or plagues reduced the population or long periods of quiet and prosperity encouraged it to increase.
